Girls in Engineering

The participation of women in engineering has improved over the years, but there is still more to be done. Here are some key statistics related to women in engineering*:

Globally:

  • Only 16-20% of engineering undergraduates globally are women, according to UNESCO’s reports on women in STEM.
  • In 2020, women accounted for about 28% of the STEM workforce globally, but within engineering, this percentage is often lower.

United States:

  • In 2022, women earned approximately 22.5% of all bachelor’s degrees in engineering in the U.S.
  • The proportion of women earning master’s and doctoral degrees in engineering is slightly higher, at around 25-26%.

Europe

  • Women account for about 30% of engineering graduates, according to Eurostat, but the share in the workforce is much lower, ranging between 12-18% across different countries.
  • Germany: Around 17% of engineering professionals are women.
  • France: Women make up about 22% of the engineering workforce.
  • United Kingdom: Women represent 16.5% of engineers

Africa:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Women make up 18-20% of engineering graduates across Sub-Saharan Africa, but workforce participation is lower, typically around 9-12%.
  • South Africa: Women hold about 23% of engineering degrees in South Africa, but only about 11% of the engineering workforce.

The concept

Girls-in-Engineering Challenge

In Bernspire we are committed to supporting girls who pursue engineering as their primary field of study. Our goal is to encourage young female engineers in their scientific contributions, to promote diversity, and to foster inclusive educational environments within engineering.

For its inaugural edition, Bernspire organizes a special context to advocate for these values. To participate in the special challenge, you must adhere to the following:

  • your team is eligible to submit for the special challenge.
  • The same team can also participate in the engineering challenge.

To qualify for the Girls-in-Engineering Challenge, your team must have female members comprising at least 50% of the total team members.
